Pac-man Doodle On Google

By now everyone should be familiar enough how Google changes its logo on their main search page if there is a special holiday or event. All of Google’s logo artwork, which they call the “doodle”, have all been very nicely designed so far. These doodles have a simple yet striking effect that captures the eyes. Plus it is always unique, I don’t recall seeing one being repeated over the years. And for this, a lot of people have gone to saving these doodles as a personal collection.

So what is it that Google has for its doodle lately?

Well, I was quite surprised when I went to Google.com today. I thought I typed the wrong URL. But after a few moments I realized that there was actually a playable Pac-man game sitting right on their website.

Yes,  the web giant has featured an interactive doodle (a first of this kind for Google) of the popular arcade game, complete with sound  effects and 255 levels including the 256th level kill screen. If Google humor included a coin slot somewhere in the page where you have to “drop” a coin to start the game, that would have made it very much like the original coin-operated machines.

All this in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Pac-man’s release in Japan.   Enjoy the game before you go on googling for something.  I know a lot of the generation today has only heard of the Pac-man game but have never really played it. Now is your chance.  You can either use your mouse or the arrow keys of your keyboard to control Pac-man.

Now for this additional trivia.  The interactive doodle isn’t made in Adobe Flash.  Is Google trying to say something? :P

I thought the Pac-Man Logo / game was great. I teach a computer class at a high school and most of the game sites are blocked. The kids had a grand old time with it (they had to finish their project of the day first – Pac-Man was great motivation!).

I’m waiting for Asteroids – that came a bit after Pac-Man, but was my personal favorite of the time!

Indeed, Pac-Man is a classic and fun game. I’m not very familiar with Asteroids. Back when I was younger, Mario ruled the consoles and StreetFighter was king of the video arcade games. :)

Have to admit. They grabbed me with that one. I can still remember buying the little paperback books that had the secret patterns for that game. Never did get good. My games were Asteroids and Galaga.

I’m glad Google featured Pac-man as their doodle. Didn’t even know what it was until then. I’m one of those born in the 90s so I had no idea about it. :D

I suggest you try Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx or Linux Mint 9 Isadora. They are wonderful Linux distributions.

Had some problems viewing the website in Firefox on Linux, but apart from that loved the post. :)

Hmmm… That’s really strange since one of our writers is using Ubuntu 10.04 on his laptop and he doesn’t have a problem viewing the site.

But thanks for the comment. ;)
